Since
becoming the 23rd president of St. Edwards University
on July 1, 1999, George E. Martin, Ph.D., has been busy. His
demanding calendar is like that of any other CEO, a balancing
act of meetings and lunches, dinners and travel. As president,
he is leading the universitys collaborative effort to
be recognized as one of the best small universities in the
country by 2010.
In the early days of his presidency, Martin introduced a set
of seven strategic priorities that
together define the future direction of the university. The
priorities include goals for enrollment, faculty recruitment
and development, curricular and co-curricular programs, facilities
and technology, financial management, endowment and marketing.
Shortly after the adoption of the strategic priorities, Martin
unveiled an ambitious ten-year physical master plan to help
meet the changing needs of the campus. The master plan includes
new academic buildings and residence halls, computer and athletic
facilities, a chapel and theater, as well as a revised road
and parking system and an on-campus arboretum.
Despite the growth and accompanying changes, there are some
aspects of St. Edwards University that will remain the
same. Martin is committed to ensuring the university stays
true to its mission to deliver a
personalized, transformative educational experience in a diverse,
nurturing and supportive community environment.
Martin says the role of president is not one of power but
of possibility. He leads by listening, thinking, sharing energy
and ideas and encouraging creativity within the culture of
the institution.
