Congregation of Holy Cross at St. Edward’s

Holy Cross Brothers Their different backgrounds, histories and experiences create a very nice learning atmosphere. Founded by Blessed Basil Moreau, CSC, in Le Mans, France, the Congregation of Holy Cross was formed in response to the need for education and evangelization in the troubled period following the French Revolution. For more than 200 years, community, collaboration, advocacy for the poor and education have guided the congregation in their mission.

In 1870 Father Edward Sorin, CSC — a visionary Holy Cross leader and one of the first members of the congregation — visited the rolling hills to the south of the bustling frontier town of Austin, Texas, that would become the site of St. Edward’s University.

Today, the Brothers of Holy Cross bring hope to the people who need it most through practical ministries around the world — education, counseling, community service, research and retreats. And they uphold their mission of educating the heart as well as the mind of St. Edward’s University students while promoting themes of service and social justice. A unique example is their Moreau House program — a campus community open to students interested in living within and learning more about the Holy Cross mission. Learn more about “Brothers.”
