Why I Teach
I teach in order to make obscure or archaic text accessible, relevant and compelling. When studying early British literature, we might forget that books or plays from cultures very distant from our own were once vitally important to the people who wrote them. I help students understand that the texts are voices one must learn from, argue with and respect.
Because I believe that texts are intimately connected to the contexts in which they were written, cultural exploration becomes an essential complement to engaging students with the literature.
