Why I Teach
I teach because I have hope. It was teachers who convinced me that following the thread of writing in my own life meant traveling a path of integrity — and that poetry and voice matters. And I teach because the practice of writing needs light upon it to grow.
The writer’s workshop is critical for both its utility as a practicum on craft and its value as a learning methodology. I seek to achieve the best parts of the workshop, creating a learning space where students feel invested in developing their art, challenged to take risks and encouraged in their reading to respond as writers as well as critical thinkers. With each class, I begin by asking, “How can I make this experience collaborative?” Which really means, “How can I make this a workshop?”
