Spring President’s Meeting Chronicles Continued Successes

In February, President George E. Martin shared an overview of the university’s most recent successes, ranging from record-setting enrollment and freshman retention and the development of curriculum that will foster a global understanding among students to fundraising efforts and student body diversity.

Enrollment and Retention Still on the Rise

Record enrollment continues with the Spring 2007 undergraduate student
body now numbering 3,095 — up from 2,887 students this same time last year. New College and graduate enrollments remain steady with 896 New College students and 970 graduate students. Further, the freshman retention from fall
to spring stands at its highest level ever — 96.3 percent — a clear sign of high student satisfaction.

A Special Destiny: $67 Million and Counting

Special Destiny Logo

With just a little over three months to go, the momentum of A Special Destiny: The Campaign for St. Edward’s University remains strong. The initial goal of $65 million has been surpassed, and the total amount raised is more than $67 million. This includes gifts totaling more than $9 million to The St. Edward’s Fund, which helps make our nationally recognized education more affordable through scholarships and by supporting resources and opportunities that enrich the student experience.

Academics: Addressing Competencies for a Global Economy

As part of our ongoing commitment to preparing students to excel in a global economy, the university developed a three-part plan to help ensure that students demonstrate an increased understanding of and sensitivity to global issues. The plan focuses on these competencies:

  • Attaining global knowledge through the study of political, economic and cultural elements
  • Cultivating global skills by increasing foreign language proficiency and intercultural communication abilities
  • Broadening global experiences by participating in local and national activities such as research projects and study abroad trips

Resources for Educators Available through The
Holy Cross Institute

Holy Cross Institute logoFounded to serve Holy Cross educators by building a community of learning and practice, The Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward’s University recently released a number of resources on its web site for educators:

  • Christian Education, an abridged paperback of the 1856 edition with a new English translation of Father Basil Moreau’s teachings
  • A Simple Tool: The Mission and Message of Father Basil Moreau, an anthology focusing on the life and teachings of the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross

Recent Campus Construction Projects Nearing Completion

After undergoing a major renovation, Fleck Hall will soon provide a new home for the School of Education — it’s scheduled for completion in August. And just for students, the Casa behind Moreau and Dujarié Halls will open in Fall 2007, with approximately 70 living spaces for upperclassmen.
