Alumni Spotlight: 2005 Alumni Achievement Award Recipient Nelson Arboleda, ’94

Nelson Arboleda, '94, originally came to St. Edward's on a soccer scholarship, but he knew his future
plans included more than playing sports — he wanted to eventually return to his home country of
Colombia to treat innocent victims of guerrilla warfare.
Helping victims of violence and trauma.

Following his graduation from St. Edward's in 1994, Arboleda attended medical school in
Calí, Colombia. His mission was to help victims of violence and trauma. Since
then, he has traveled the globe working with those victims and educating the physicians who treat
them.
He has presented at conferences in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Helsinki, Finland, on the
effects of war and violence on children and in Colombia, on violence prevention programs.
He has also published articles such as "The Effects of War on the Colombian Population," which
ran in the journal Medicine, Conflict and Survival.
He has even traveled as far as Helsinki, Finland, and Bosnia-Herzegovina to present on violence prevention programs and the effects of war and violence on children. He has also published articles such as "The Effects of War on the Colombian Population," which ran in the journal Medicine, Conflict and Survival and " American Doctors Speaking out on War Issues" in the British Medical Journal.
Lifelong learning.

Arboleda's education didn't end when he graduated from medical school — in July 2004, he began a two-year
assignment with the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga.
The post-graduate program offers service and on-the-job training for health professionals interested
in the practice of epidemiology. As part of the assignment, he is working in India and Nigeria with
the World Health Organization to help with the eradication of polio. Previously, Arboleda served as
a project specialist supervising the Violent Injury Surveillance System at the William Lehman Injury
Research Center in Miami, Fla.
Honoring alumni achievement.
For his efforts as a physician and activist, Arboleda received a 2005 Alumni Achievement Award at Homecoming in February. The award is given annually to a graduate who has demonstrated professional excellence and has contributed to his or her profession and community.
