Alumni Leaders, Come On Down!
Forty alumni representing the university’s 14 alumni chapters gathered in June for three days of game show–themed teambuilding and planning. Held on campus June 8–10, the “Game Show Mania” Alumni Leaders Conference marked the third year the Office of Alumni and Parent Programs has organized the event.
Participants kicked off the conference with dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse, followed by an evening in downtown Austin. On Saturday, attendees heard the latest news from Alumni and Parent Programs and learned how to build an annual plan for their chapter. They also broke out into committees to brainstorm topics like community service projects and continuing education for alumni.
Game shows, including Jeopardy, Supermarket Sweep and $10,000 Pyramid, provided the theme — and a plethora of fun — for each day’s sessions. The conference concluded on Sunday with a Price Is Right styled “Showcase Showdown” featuring breakfast and a roundup of the weekend’s activities.
The Men of Tiger Town Reunite
More than 170
St. Edward’s High School alumni came back to campus June 16 to revive old friendships and relive memories of their time as students. Several Holy Cross Brothers, high school faculty members and graduates from St. Mary’s Academy (the high school’s sister institution) attended.
Planned by St. Edward’s High School graduates with assistance from Alumni and Parent Programs, the event marked the 40th anniversary of the high school’s closing. The reunion began with a memorial Mass led by Father Rick Wilkinson, CSC, in honor of classmates, brothers and faculty who had passed away. Afterward, attendees gathered for dinner in the Maloney Room — where many had roomed as students. Brother Edwin Reggio, CSC, who taught Math and Music at St. Edward’s High School and directed the band and glee clubs, delivered an invocation and led the prayer to celebrate the evening. Brother Peter Celestine Maranto, CSC — the longest-serving principal — was also present.
Night at the Ballpark: San Antonio Style
San Antonio alumni celebrated the arrival of summer with its first-ever Night at the Ballpark event on May 17. Alumni and their families enjoyed a pre-game tailgate party hosted by chapter leaders Brother Jesus Alonso, CSC, ’01; Alison Kushnerick, ’99; Maureen McConnell, ’97; and Shana Spring, ’04. They then watched the San Antonio Missions take on the Frisco RoughRiders inside Nelson W. Wolff Stadium. Those who attended also enjoyed Dollar Night at the stadium — feasting on $1 hot dogs, pizza, beer and sodas.
Though San Antonio’s ballpark event was its first, summertime baseball fun is nothing new to the university’s alumni chapters. The Austin Alumni Chapter hosted its sixth annual Night at the Ballpark in July.
