Alumni Spotlight: Honoring Distinguished Alumni
Sam Tramonte, ’56, Susan Scarle Philips, ’73, and Michael Guerra, ’83, will be recognized at Homecoming 2006 for service to their communities. Here’s a sneak peak at their accomplishments.

Sam Tramonte, ’56, is a founding partner of Tramonte, Tramonte & Bastien in Galveston. He is a member of the State Board of Texas and the Knights of Columbus and has served on the boards of O’Connell Catholic High School, U.S. National Bank–Galveston and the Advisory Board of Frost Bank. He served on the university’s Board of Trustees for more than a decade, and his brother, son, daughter and nephew are also alumni. He will celebrate his 50th class reunion at Homecoming 2006.

Susan Scarle Philips, ’73, has practiced law in California and Texas since the early 1990s with an emphasis in estate and disability planning. Since the 1970s, she has supported renovations and acquisitions to the Scarborough-Phillips Library, named in honor of her grandparents Loyce Phillips and Inez Scarborough Phillips, and she has donated a collection of books on women in the Southwest. Philips is a member of the Austin Bar Association, the Travis County Women Lawyer’s Association, and the State Bar of California. She continues to stay involved with the university by serving on the university’s Gift Planning Advisory Council and supporting the campus library, as well as the university’s history and government programs.

Michael Guerra, ’83, is deputy executive director of the Capital Area Food Bank. As chief of operations, he helps ensure that 16 million pounds of food is distributed to more than 370 human service agencies in 21 Central Texas counties each year. He has served as director of Volunteers for Educational and Social Services, a program of the Texas Catholic Conference, and as director of corporations and foundations at St. Edward’s. He continues to teach at the university as an adjunct instructor and serves on the New College Advisory Council. He also is the executive editor of Austin Business District magazine.
