Alumni Unite with Professor Neal Wise
Alumni living in the Washington, D.C., area gathered March 23 to share their views during a roundtable discussion led by Professor of Political Science Neal Wise titled “Thoughts on Divided Government: Will it Work After 2006?” Central to the discussion was a look at a time in American politics when there were no parties, yet the Framers of the Constitution still warned against any concentration of governmental power.

While the group was intimate, alumni came ready to talk, including Congressional Quarterly Staff Writer Alan Ahlrich, ’00, and Kevin Griffith, ’00, a strategy and operations consultant for Deloitte Consulting LLP, specializing in federal practice.

Michael O’Brien, ’90, helped host the event and arranged for the meeting to convene at the headquarters of The German Marshall Fund of the United States, where O’Brien works as director of information technology. The German Marshall Fund is a global institution dedicated to promoting greater cooperation and understanding between America and Europe.

Master of Liberal Arts Symposium logoMaster of Liberal Arts Symposium
On April 19, the Master of Liberal Arts program held its annual symposium, which showcases the diverse academic achievements of graduating and current students. Program Director Paula Marks, ’78, says that no two MLA degree plans are ever alike. One look at the rich and varied presentations, which reflect the depth and breadth of the program, and you’ll agree:

  • A documentary film by Lacey Aleman, ’04, MLA ’06, about an East Texas facility for troubled youth
  • A multimedia collage by Neil MacQuarrie, MLA ’07, that explores the media’s use of violence as a tool of manipulation
  • Monologue performances of women playwrights directed by Liz Soto, MLA ’07

Students celebrating at Party at the HilltopParty at the Hilltop
On April 27, the university celebrated the last day of spring semester classes with an afternoon mixer, an event co-sponsored by the University Programming Board. Members from the Austin Alumni Chapter, students, and faculty and staff members spanned Ragsdale Lawn to welcome the Class of 2007 to the Alumni Association.

Driver F, Drew Smith and his Band, Sounds Under Radio and Eleven Fingered Charlie filled the air with music as alumni-owned businesses like Best Wurst, Sweet Leaf Tea and South Austin Sno served up food and drinks. And, a raffle allowed some lucky students to walk away with goodie baskets, gift cards and $200 vouchers for Southwest Airlines. Did you miss this event? Don’t worry, there’s always something brewing on the hilltop. Check out our alumni event listings.
