St. Edward’s Recognition Day at the Capitol:

A sunny, blue-sky April morning set the stage for the first-ever St. Edward’s University Recognition Day at the Texas State Capitol. Alumni, students and friends of St. Edward’s University joined President George E. Martin and other university representatives for the reading of a resolution in both the House and the Senate chambers. The resolution (PDF) honored the contributions St. Edward’s has made to Austin and Texas.

A Proud Tribute

No one was more proud of the tribute than alumni board member Joel Romo ’94, who spearheaded the event. “The Texas Legislature recognizes significant events, accomplishments and distinguished individuals during their 140-day regular session,” says Romo. “Establishing a recognition day is a perfect way to raise awareness about St. Edward’s … and celebrate the successes of the university.”

As vice president of Advocacy for the Texas Heart Association, Romo knew how to get his idea in front of lawmakers. The resolution was eventually authored by Rep. Eddie Rodriguez and Sen. Kirk Watson.

History in the Making

Attendees at a Capitol reception following the reading were impressed by the occasion. “It’s historic for the university,” says Professor of Political Science Neal Wise, who helped get the word out to students about the event. More than 30 attended.

“It’s great to see the university recognized for its achievements,” says Political Science major Krista Heiden ’11, who interns with Sen. Wendy Davis. “This event also helps point to all of our students and alumni who work here.”

Former executive director and lobbyist for the Catholic Bishops Conference, Brother Richard Daly, CSC ’61, also a St. Edward’s trustee, could not agree more. “This recognition day provides a way for all of the St. Edward’s folks involved with the legislature to connect with each other. And there are quite a few of them.”

The St. Edward’s Day resolution was co-authored by several Hilltoppers: Rep. Dennis Bonnen ’94, Rep. Diana Maldonado ’00, and adjunct instructor of Social Work Rep. Elliott Naishtat.
