Academic
counseling helps students at St. Edward’s become self-directed
learners by developing effective skills for college success. Services
include individual appointments and individual
and group tutoring. Academic Planning and Support Services (APSS)
also offers several classes designed to enhance students’
performance in college studies through the development of effective
academic and self-management skills.
Improving Academic Performance
APSS wants each student to perform
to the best of their ability academically. To assist students
in their efforts, we offer the following:
- Individual Academic Counseling appointments
Undergraduate students will meet regularly during their freshman
year with their APSS counselor. These
meetings can allow for discussion of the student’s
adjustment to college, as well as providing academic skills
training in such topics as time management, reading skills,
and test preparation. All St. Edward’s students are encouraged
to utilize these appointments as they continue through all stages
of their college career.
- APSC 1110 - Effective College Learning
This course is designed to enhance
students’ success in college studies through the development
of effective academic and self management skills. Topics discussed
include note taking, time management, reading and test-taking
skills, concentration, memory techniques, handling stress, motivation,
and exploring and clarifying academic and life goals. When indicated
by the Dean of Academic Services or by conditional admission
status, certain students will be required to enroll in this
course. (Fall, Spring)
- FYSM 1104 TO 1111 – First Year
Seminar in the Major
The First Year Seminar is one credit course to assist with the transition to college. For students with a declared major, the course provides contact with faculty, programming, and academic advisement specific to the major; for students in the Academic Exploration Program, the course provides information and advising that will help students explore their interests in a variety of degree and career options. (Fall only)
- Progress Reports
Progress reports for selected
students are sent to faculty by an APSS counselor before mid-semester
during each fall and spring. These students include freshmen,
some first-semester transfer students, and all students on academic
probation. Students and advisors receive access to the completed
reports. Students are encouraged to discuss their progress with
their instructors.
- Academic Enrichment and Tutoring
Academic Enrichment and Tutoring seeks to help students develop the skills and knowledge that they need to achieve both academic success and personal satisfaction. We help students take control of their learning by assisting them with setting, clarifying, and achieving their academic goals; planning and organizing their work; and understanding course materials, professors' expectations, and their academic progress.
