Academic
Planning and Support Services (APSS) counselors provide individual
guidance and information to help freshmen with declared majors,
Academic Exploration participants, and new
transfer students take responsibility for defining and planning
their academic lives. Students and counselors work together to
assess the educational development of each individual. This includes
reviewing academic progress, planning semester schedules, exploring
degree options, and clarifying goals in preparation for assignment
to a faculty advisor in the chosen major.
Advising and Preparing
for Registration: A Shared Responsibility
Academic advising helps students to accomplish
these objectives:
- explore and clarify educational, career and
life goals
- create short and long-term plans to accomplish
these goals
- select a major that balances goals, interests
and abilities
- understand requirements of the major and the
University
- identify and register for appropriate courses
In order for these goals to be achieved, students must fulfill
their own responsibilities in the advising process by taking these
steps:
- make and keep appointments with their advisor
well before registration begins
- stay up-to-date about university policies,
procedures and requirements using the Bulletin that applies
to you (Undergraduate,
New College,
Graduate),
Student
Handbook, and EdWeb
registration system
- come to all advising sessions and appointments
prepared:
o review registration information and the Course
Schedule
o make a tentative list of courses and alternates for the next
semester
o prepare a list of any questions about your degree plan and
its requirements
o complete the Advising
Prep Worksheet (PDF)
- make use of the advisor's knowledge; it’s
a valuable resource

Changing your Major
Students have the option to change
their minds regarding their chosen major. Once you have decided
on a new major, schedule an appointment with your advisor to fill
out the required form. The following list includes resources to
help students in the decision making process:
Probation, Extended Probation, and
Dismissal
The cumulative grade point average for courses
taken at St. Edward’s University must be at least 2.00.
Students falling below 2.00 are allowed one probationary semester
to raise the GPA to the acceptable level. At the end of this semester
students who have not attained the required cumulative GPA but
have attained a semester GPA of 2.25 or higher in 12 or more hours
(or, if part- time, in all hours attempted) are allowed one semester
of Extended Probation, with the condition that they must complete
12 hours with a 2.50 semester GPA if full-time or all hours attempted
with a 2.50 semester GPA if part-time. If at the end of the second
semester on probation the student still has not attained the required
GPA, he or she is dismissed from the university. For more information,
