Academic Coaching at St. Edward’s
The Academic Enrichment and Tutoring Services department offers Academic Coaching services for St. Edward’s student athletes. Academic Coaching involves helping student athletes adjust to collegiate life by teaching study skills, communication skills, and time management. Student athletes are also guided through deciding on majors, careers, and goals. Weekly check-ups on course assignments and deadlines are helpful in encouraging students to stay on top of their studies, and reports are sent each week to coaches to update them on their students’ needs and progress. These one-on-one sessions can have a positive impact on students’ motivation, direction, and success at St. Edward’s and beyond. We also offer every-other-week sessions and “check in” sessions, which are well-suited for upperclassmen and transfer students.
Identifying Students for Academic Coaching
Here are some easy guidelines that coaches can use to identify athletes who would receive the maximum benefit from Academic Coaching:
-
Freshman student
- Transfer student
- Student on academic probation
- Student in danger of becoming ineligible for sports
- Student with a learning disability
- Student with a high level of stress or strife
- International student
- Out-of-state student
- Student with a GPA below 2.75
- Student with a negative attitude
- Student who is struggling socially (homesick, few friends, shy)
- Student who is managing time poorly (always tired, turning in late assignments, partying, etc.)
If you are a coach with a student athlete who fits any combination of these attributes, please contact Rachel McGinnis at rachelmc@stedwards.edu or x1292, and she will be happy to include your student in Academic Coaching. |
