Online Writing Lab (OWL) Workshops, Fall 2009
The Online Writing Lab (OWL) is offering a series of free writing workshops for the St. Edward’s community. These workshops will be held on Saturday mornings periodically through the semester and will last about an hour. If you are interested in attending, please send an e-mail to owl@stedwards.edu with “OWL Workshop RSVP” in the subject line.
- Getting Started: Picking a Topic and Brainstorming. Sometimes the hardest part of the paper is getting off to a good start. This workshop will concentrate how to get moving on a writing project, with particular emphasis on topic selection and brainstorming techniques.

- OWL Open House. What is the OWL and how can it help me? The OWL staff invites interested students and faculty to stop by to learn more about the OWL and the services our office provides. (No RSVP necessary.)
Saturday, September 12, 11:00-11:30 a.m. (immediately following the “Getting Started” workshop), Ragsdale Center, 301 (Lucas Room)
- Achieving Focus: Organizing Your Paper around a Thesis. What is a thesis and why is it so important anyway? This workshop will explore different approaches to writing a thesis statement and how to organize to stay focused on the development of that thesis.

- Shaping Your Thoughts: Effective Paragraph Techniques. When do I start a new paragraph? This workshop will introduce participants to some basic principles of paragraph organization and provide several models for effective paragraphs.

- Using Your Sources Effectively: Integrating Research Material. So, I’ve got some good research: How do I use it in my paper? This workshop will explore how to effectively integrate other people’s research and ideas into your own. In addition to some basics on citation, we will discuss how best to introduce, frame, and discuss that research material so that it serves the needs of your paper.

- Open Workshop on APA Style. I’ve got my APA Handbook—how do I use it? After providing a brief introduction to APA, we will focus on specific questions submitted by students about using APA citations. NOTE: In your RSVP, please submit one or two questions that you would like the OWL staff to address. Bring your APA Handbook with you to the workshop.

- Open Workshop on MLA Style. I’ve got my MLA Handbook—how do I use it? After providing a brief introduction to MLA, we will focus on specific questions submitted by students about using MLA citations.
