Summer Academic Excellence Awards
Summer Academic Excellence Awards, which will typically range from $1000 to $3000, will be awarded annually to approximately 10 juniors, enabling them to engage in summer independent study and/or travel to explore an intellectual interest or to undertake a public service project related to their field of academic interest. The funds must be used over the summer between the junior and senior year or, with approval from the Director of Fellowships, during the senior year.
This is your chance to think about what experience would most enhance your academic interests and future career goals. You might be an environmental science major who wants to engage in water quality research with a non-profit, a political science major who wants to travel to an archive to get material for your senior thesis, or an international relations major who needs to study intensive Mandarin in Beijing.
All projects should have a substantive link to your academic interests. (See the attached sample proposal as an example.)
- Projects that include research related to a thesis or independent study will be given preference.
- Projects that incorporate the use or study of a foreign language are encouraged.
- Financial need is a consideration.
Awardees must attend two workshops, one in April 2009 and one in September 2009, focused on how to integrate student projects into strong fellowship applications to fund similar experiences after graduation. Awardees are required to complete at least one post-graduation fellowship application.
DEADLINE:
Students must submit the attached application form and a 500-word essay describing the project and its importance to their academic work and post-graduation goals by March 26, 2009 in 317 Premont.
