Student Disability Services
Making the Transition

Be Aware of your own Disability

In college you will have much more responsibility for the request and arrangement of academic accommodations than you have had before. It will benefit you to know about your disability. If you have a Learning Disability, know your academic strengths and your areas of learning difficulty. If possible, talk with a learning disability specialist or your teachers about your strengths and weaknesses in school. In what ways have your instructors, tutors or personal study methods improved your learning?

Contact the Student Disability Services Office
Make an appointment with your disability counselor at the beginning of each semester. You may want to set up weekly or bimonthly appointments during your first two semesters to monitor your academic progress. Your SDS counselor will make every effort to be available to you, but will not contact you. It is your responsibility to make and keep all appointments.

Student and Faculty Responsibilities

If you qualify for 504 accommodations, both the university and the student have responsibilities:

  • The professor is required by law to grant the accommodations indicated in the 504 letter.
  • The student is responsible for making the appointment with the SDS office and presenting documentation to the disability counselor.
  • The student is responsible for delivering the 504 accommodation letter to the professors.
Expectations

Do NOT assume that:

  • You will receive the same accommodations in college that you received in high school.
  • You are the only student who has a disability and has to struggle with classes .
  • If your first grades in a class are low (and you have worked hard) you will not be able to succeed in that class.
  • Professors know what your disability is and will treat you accordingly.
  • Because you did not take a foreign language course or an algebra course in high school you will not be required to take one in college.
  • The SDS counselor will speak to professors for you.
  • You are on your own.
