Tutoring Services At St. Edward's University

The mission of Tutoring Services is to promote academic achievement and personal satisfaction in college by encouraging students to become effective, active, independent learners and by helping them master course content in key lower division courses.

To schedule a tutoring appointment, please call 448-8660.

What Tutoring Services offers
All currently enrolled undergraduate students are offered low-cost or free one-on-one and group tutoring. The courses for which tutoring is offered vary from semester to semester, but usually include all required lower-division courses and any course with a significant writing component. When possible, we also provide tutoring for students preparing to take standardized tests (THEA or GRE) and CLEP tests.

How to find Tutoring Services
The Tutoring Services Coordinator has an office within the Academic Planning and Support Services (APSS) suite, Moody Hall 155. The phone number is 448-8627.  The Tutoring Lab, where students meet with tutors, is in Moody Hall 122 & 123.

How to get tutoring
Before you can schedule a tutoring appointment, you must first complete an orientation with the Tutoring Services Coordinator or another APSS staff member. These sessions take about fifteen minutes and serve to orient you to Tutoring Services and its policies and fees, and to determine if you are eligible for free tutoring. To schedule a orientation, please call 448-8660.

Once you have completed the orientation, you will able to schedule tutoring appointments online for the rest of the academic year.

How to get the most out of tutoring
Tutors can assist most effectively when you first begin to experience problems with a class. Therefore, you should sign up for tutoring before you are in a crisis situation. Do not wait to arrange tutoring until the day before a big test, or until you are in danger of failing a course. Think of tutoring as a supplement to what you are learning in class and from the textbooks. Tutoring is NOT a substitute for going to class and doing the assigned work.

When you work with a tutor, you can expect to have the undivided attention of someone who is knowledgeable in the subject matter and dedicated to helping you understand it. A tutor’s job is to listen carefully to you and answer your questions, to clarify course material, and to help you develop better time-management, test-taking, and study skills. A tutor’s job is NOT to do the work for you, or to teach you material for the first time.

The more prepared you are for a tutoring session, the more productive and helpful it will be. Be sure to bring your textbook and any relevant course materials to your tutoring appointments, and do as much of the assigned work as you can beforehand.

A few rules to keep in mind
  1. If you do not show up for a scheduled appointment, you will be charged for it, even if you are eligible for free tutoring. You may cancel appointments, but you must do so 24 hours in advance to avoid being considered a no-show
  2. You may not sign up for two hours of tutoring in a row.
  3. We will hold appointments for thirty minutes after their scheduled time. If you are more than half an hour late for an appointment, there is no guarantee that your tutor will still be available for you.
