Hilltopper Baseball Hosts Baseball 2009 Alumni Game
AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's University baseball team hosted its 2009 Baseball Aliumni Game on Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Over 50 former Hilltopper players attended this all-day event, that included a home-run derby, alumni game, and barbeque lunch.
The event gave former players the opportunity to return to campus, visit with their old teammates and meet this year's edition of the Hilltopper baseball team.
St. Edward's shot out to a 2-0 lead after the first two innings. The Alumni Team battled back to take a 3-2 lead midway through the game. St. Edward's then took back the lead 5-4 after seven innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Alumni Team plated one run to knot the score, 5-5. Then, 2006 graduate Brian Saunders sent the alumni bench into a frenzy with two outs and a runner on second, when he launched a shot down the left-field line that cleared the fence, but was just foul.
The game was called after eight innings, and the final score was St. Edward's 5, Alumni Team 5.
"It was nice to see such a big turnout of former players and their families," head coach Rob Penders said. "This was just a fun day and everyone involved had a great time. I was glad my team got to see just how much dedication these former players have to the program."
