Hilltoppers take rubber game from Newman

Robert Hays

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward's took advantage of a sparkling performance from pitcher Jeff Rohrback, as well as a pair of home runs, to take the rubber game of a three game series with Newman.  The Hilltoppers took the game, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

St. Edward's (21-12, 16-7 HC) got off to a great start in this ballgame.  Center fielder led off the game with a triple down the left field line. Designated hitter Daniel Rufini drove him in with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Hilltoppers struck again in the fourth inning.  Left fielder Justin Shufelt led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.  Later in the inning, third baseman Robert Hays blasted a two-run home run to left field.  This was his first home run of the season.

Newman (17-14, 15-13 HC) scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning.  St. Edward's got one of those runs back in the seventh.  Second baseman Drew Cross drove in Schuch with a double to left field.  This was all the Hilltoppers would need, as they went on to win the game, 5-2.

Schuch paced the offense during this game.  He went 2-4 with two runs scored.  Hays was 1-4 with two RBI's and a home run.  Cross, Rufini, and Shufelt each drove in a run during the game as well.

On the mound for the Hilltoppers, Jeff Rohrbach (1-1) contributed a stellar performance.  He worked seven innings, giving up two runs, neither or which were earned, on four hits.  He also struck out four Jets.  Dustin Johnson worked two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday afternoon as they travel to Jefferson City, Missouri to take on Lincoln.  The two teams will play a doubleheader and the first pitch is set for noon.
