Hilltoppers Keep It Close Against A&M Corpus Christi, Fall 75-66
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The St. Edward's men's basketball team cut a large halftime deficit against division I-rival Texas A&M Corpus Christi but were unable to take the road win at the Dugan Wellness Center suffering their third straight loss, 75-66.
St. Edward's (0-3) fell behind early as the Islanders opened with a 10-0 run. It took the hot hands of seniors Jannik Zimmer and Jeff Miner to open the scoring for the Hilltoppers as they connected for the first 11 points.
A&M Corpus Christi (3-2) starting the half early and were lead by Terrence Jones who was all over the court as he connected with three pointers, assists, and steals for the Islanders. The Islanders led by as many as 17 in the first half and would settle for a 15 point halftime lead against the Hilltoppers.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers were able to cut the huge lead down, as the strong Hilltopper defenders were able to hold the Islanders at the 50 point mark for just over five minutes. It was a trey by sophomore Cameron Couball, assisted by senior Corey Griffin that tied the game for the Hilltoppers with eight minutes remaining. The game would remain close with both teams battling back and forth the rest of the way. It would come down to the Islanders holding onto their narrow lead and connecting on their free-throw attempts to end the game.
Miner led both teams with 23 points. Senior Bobby Watkins led the Hilltoppers with four assists.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Tuesday as they host Concordia at the Recreation and Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and play-by-play will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
