All-American Fuentes braves elements, finishes 26th at National Championship
SLIPPERY ROCK, Penn. - St. Edward's senior David Fuentes ended his Hilltopper career in fine fashion Saturday morning, finishing 26th at the 2008 National Championship. His finish also qualifies him as an All-America selection.
With the temperature below freezing, and snow on the ground, Fuentes ran a time of 31:57 to place him 26th. There were 166 individuals competing this year. Fuentes was named all-america by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. This is the first NCAA All-America selection by a St. Edward's cross country student-athlete.
Chico State's Scott Bauhs took home the individual title with a time of 30:23. Fuentes only missed the top-20 by seven seconds.
Fuentes, a native of Boerne, Texas, qualified for Nationals as an individual. Last season, he finished 53rd at the NCAA Championship.
The senior ends his career having won three-straight Heartland Conference Runner of the Year crowns, three appearances in the NCAA Regionals, and two appearances in the NCAA National Championship.
