Fuentes repeats as Heartland Conference Champion, Hilltoppers finish fifth
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior David Fuentes ran a time of 25:43 to repeat as the individual champion for the second-straight year at the Heartland Conference Meet Saturday afternoon. St. Edward’s finished fifth as a team at the meet.
Fuentes defeated Dallas Baptist’s Felix Rodriguez (25:59) by 16 seconds as the Patriot finished in second place.
Also competing for St. Edward’s were freshmen Cody Beamon (28:07) and Alex Gay (28:42) who finished 15th and 16th, respectively. Senior Jason Alvarez (32:09) finished 34th and freshman Jeff Thomas (32:23) ended 36th. Sophomore Dan O’Dwyer (33:31) finished 40th, while junior Benjamin Palmer (36:00) ended in 44th place.
The conference meets mark the end of the season for the Hilltopper team as they have completed their fourth NCAA season. Fuentes, Beamon and Gay will all compete individulally at the NCAA Regional to be held Nov. 3rd, in Joplin, Mo.
