Hilltopper lose lead to St. Mary’s, finish second at Heartland Conference Championship
HORSESHOE BAY, Texas - Senior Andrew Workman shot a tournament-best 65 on the final round of the Heartland Conference Championship to lead the charge but that was not enough as the Hilltoppers were defeated by St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon at Slick Rock Golf Club.
St. Edward's (277-285-282=844) held a 10-stroke lead after round one. St. Mary's (287-276-275=838) closed the gap to one stroke as they shot 12-under par as a team in round two. In round three, the Rattlers kept things rolling as they did even better in the final round. St. Mary's shot a 13-under par and bested St. Edward's by six strokes when it was all said done.
Workman (73-70-65=208) was just three shots off of the course record of 62, that was set by Tom Kite. His seven-under par round was not enough as Jeff Rein (66-68-70=204) of St. Mary's led wire-to-wire, with teammate Matt Vela (287-276-275=438) finishing in second place.
Also, competing for the Hilltoppers, were juniors Collin Mayer (68-72-70=210) and Matthew Hatcher (67-70-74=211), who finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
The Hilltoppers will more than likely be back in action May 4-6, when they take part in the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional to be hosted by Grand Valley State at The Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich.
