Mayer’s school-record 64 leads Hilltoppers to a second-place tie after weather-shortened day one of Rollins Invitational

Collin Mayer

OCOEE, Fla. - Senior Collin Mayer shot a school-record 64 to lead St. Edward's to a second-place tie in the Rollins Invitational Monday at the 7,095-yard Par 72 Forest Lake Golf Club. The first round was delayed two hours due to early morning fog. Therefore, round two was not complete at the end of the day.

Mayer, a Houston, Texas native, shot a three-under 33 on the front nine, and tallied an even better five-under 31 on the back nine and leads the tournament that features 75 individuals. He broke a record shared by four people, which also included Mayer. He shot a 65 in the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional to tie the record.

Mayer leads Nova Southeastern's Ben Vertz (65) by one stroke and Florida Southern's Shelton Smith (66) by two strokes for the individual lead.

Hilltopper freshman Brad Lyle shot a two-under 70 and is in a tie for ninth place. Matthew Hatcher (73) is tied for 27th place, while junior Mitch Cahill (75) is tied for 47th place. Sophomore Santiago Quintero (76) is tied for 55th place.

St. Edward's (282) is tied for second with Barry (282). They sit one stroke ahead of host Rollins College (283) and four strokes in front of Florida Southern (286). They are both 11 shots behind Nova Southeastern.

The field will tee it up at 8 a.m. and complete approximately the final four holes of the second round from day one. That will be followed by the third and final round.
