#16 St. Edward’s takes down #24 Incarnate Word, 1-0
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The 16th-ranked St. Edward's Hilltoppers defeated the 24th-ranked Incarnate Word Cardinals, 1-0 Friday evening at Benson Stadium.
St. Edward's (9-2, 3- HC) scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute when junior John Cslandro slipped behind the Incarnate Word defense and beat the Cardinal goalkeeper in an one-on-one situation. This was Calandro's second-straight game with goal.
For St. Edward's, this was the first time since 2000, that the Hilltoppers have defeated Incarnate Word. It had been without a victory in their last 14 meetings with the Cardinals.
St. Edward's is now in first place in the Heartland Conference with the only unblemished conference record amongst Heartland teams.
"I was very happy with the effort," head coach Brian Young said. "It was a very tough, physical game and we had to use a lot of players, so we will see how we bounce back against UT-Permian Basin on Monday."
Incarnate Word (6-4, 2-1 HC) outshot the Hilltoppers, 16-6, but the number of shots on goal was even at four shot each.
The Hilltopper defense pitched its seventh shutout of the season.
St. Edward's will be back in action Monday when they host UT-Permian Basin. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field. Cameron Kushwara will broadcast the game live, so check the Hilltopper Web Schedule for a link to all the action.
