AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Newman Friday afternoon at the SEU Soccer Field in the Pam Nannen Memorial Classic. The victory keeps the Hilltoppers in first place in the Heartland Conference.

St. Edward's (6-7-2, 6-1 HC) looked to score early with a through-ball reaching senior Scott Strickland into the box in the 2nd minute yet the shot was just wide of the far post.

Newman (3-10-3, 2-5-1 HC) celebrated a goal in the 21st minute but it was called back due to an offsides.

The Hilltoppers were awarded a free kick in the 44th minute. The free kick was taken by senior John Calandro into the box, and after some confusion, it was one-timed by Strickland, senior Beau Grantier was credited with the assist.

In the second half, both teams sent numerous shots at each other's nets with the Hilltoppers holding a 13-10 shot advantage in the second frame. St. Edward's put the game away in the 85th minute when junior Joeski Williams took a cross into the box from Kevin Klaus and shot it past the Jet goalkeeper to ice the game.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Jets, 25-10, and put eight shots on goal, compared to just five for Newman.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sunday when they host UT-Permian Basin. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the SEU Soccer Field. The match has been named Senior Day, as St. Edward's will have nine seniors playing their final home match of their careers.
