Hilltoppers Compete in Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's men's tennis team competed in the Texas Invitational hosted at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.

In singles action senior Brett Powers and junior Ryan Wiggins each advanced to the quarterfinals. Powers received a first round bye advancing him to the round of 16 in which he defeated UT Arlington's Giacomo Sano, 7-5, 6-3. In quarterfinals Powers was unable to overcome Christian Saravia of Rice, 6-4, 6-0. Wiggins went three sets against Devin Harley of Lamar defeating him, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Wiggins received a second round bye due to a withdrawal placing him in the quarterfinal match against Jonathan Chang of Rice in which he was defeated, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Junior Mick Walter passed the first round after a withdrawal but was defeated by Saravia in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(6). Hilltopper seniors Boris Barrios and Justin Raiti had early departures after they were defeated in the first round. Barrios was defeated by Sameer Patwardahn of Texas A&M and Raiti was defeated by Calon Alpar of A&M in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles action Powers and Walter, after a first round bye,  paired up to take on Alberto Bautista and Jack Seider of A&M, but were defeated, 8-6, 7-5. Barrios and Wiggins also had an early departure after they were defeated in the round of 32 by Mateus Campos and Antoine Raffaelli of Laredy, 8-6, 6-4.
