Hilltoppers Pull Double-Duty in ITA Tournament
ABILENE, Texas - The St. Edward's men's tennis team continued its play in the Wilson/ITA South Central Region Championship this Saturday in Abilene with players alive in both the singles and doubles draws.
In singles, senior Brett Powers advanced to the quartefinals by defeating Thomas Pelxoto of East Central, 6-4, 6-4. In the following round, second seeded Powers was defeated by Alex Wieland of Incarnate Word, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. Senior Bernie Lancaster was also knocked out of the tournament by SW Baptist's Marton Zsiga, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, both Hilltopper teams fell in the quarterfinals round. The top seeded team comprised of junior Mick Walter and Powers was defeated by Jorge Margiotta and Marton Zsiga of SW Baptist, 7-5, 6-7 10-6. Senior Boris Barrios and Lancaster were also knocked out in the quarterfinals by the Northwest Missouri State team of Vijit Sehgal and Ryan Westerhof, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
