Becoming a Hilltopper Student-Athlete
To be in compliance with NCAA recruiting rules, prospective student-athletes must adhere to the following guidelines.
Prospective Student-Athlete Visits
Prospective student-athletes may make unofficial and official visits to the university.
- Unofficial Visit – A visit made to the university at the prospects own expense. A prospect may visit the university an unlimited number of times.
- Official Visit – A visit made to the university where the university provides any portion of the costs. A prospect may only make one official visit to the university that does not exceed 48 hours. During the visit, a prospect may participate in physical workouts provided that activities are not organized or observed by the coaching staff. Prospects may receive meals, lodging, transportation and admission to campus events, and prospects may also receive transportation. Prior to the visit, a prospect must:
- Provide an academic transcript and an ACT or SAT test score
- Be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center
Correspondence, Contacts and Evaluations
Letters and printed material may be received from coaches (or other university members) beginning Sept.1 of a prospect’s junior year. Phone calls and all other contacts may begin June 15 after completion of the prospect’s junior year. Prospects or parents may call a coach as often as they wish; however, the university may only call a prospect or parent once a week. A coach may not contact a prospect during a competition.
E-mail and fax are also considered correspondence, but are not limited. Text messaging and instant messaging are not allowed.
There is no limit to the number of evaluations the university conducts. This includes any off-campus activity designed to assess athletic ability and/or academic qualifications.
Tryouts
Only seniors who have completed their sport season or are in a term other than the “traditional” sport season may participate. St. Edward’s may only conduct one tryout per prospect per sport on campus.
In order to tryout, prospective student-athletes are required to undergo a medical examination or evaluation administered or supervised by a physician prior to tryouts. (A physical that was completed within six months of participation in practice, competition or out-of-season conditioning activities during their senior year of high school as long as it is accepted by their high school for their participation in athletics during the senior year.)
