St. Edward’s drops final exhibition to UT-San Antonio, 74-53
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The St. Edward's women's basketball team wrapped up preseason play on Saturday evening as they dropped a 74-53 decision to NCAA Division I UT-San Antonio at the Convocation Center.
UT-San Antonio opened the game outscoring St. Edward's, 15-1, in the first five minutes of the game. Judy Jones led the way for the Roadrunners, scoring six points, while Ashleigh Franklin chipped in with four points of her own.
St. Edward's would finally get some offense rolling as senior Tiss Rocquemore had a bucket, along with a layup from freshman Monica James. Freshman Sara Milewski added a three pointer, to cut the lead to 20-8, with 12:29 remaining in the first half.
The Roadrunners would increase their lead to 38-10 on a free throw from Jermini Malone at the 4:28 mark of the first half.
The Hilltoppers would end the first half on a 13-4 run led by senior Sophia Holguin, who registered a layup and a jumper. The spurt would cut the lead to 42-23 at the break.
In the second half, St. Edward's would begin with an 8-4 run sparked by four free throws. James' layup with 15:35 remaining would bring the score to 46-31.
UT-San Antonio responded with a 10-4 run over the next two minutes to put the game out of reach with a 21-point lead.
Holguin led the Hilltoppers with 11 points. Two freshmen had outstanding games for St. Edward's. James and Milewski almost had double-doubles. James ended with eight points and eight rebounds, while Milewski tallied seven points and eight rebounds.
Franklin led all scorers with 18 points to go along with his game-high 14 rebounds. Amber Gregg added 12 points, while Jones scored 11, and Whitney Wright posted 10 points.
St. Edward's will be back in action when it opens the 2009-10 regular season Monday, November 16th. The Hilltoppers will travel to San Angelo, Texas to take on Angelo State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and Grant Sanregret will have the play-by-play on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
