Hilltoppers Drop Heartbreaker to Newman in Double-Overtime, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's women's soccer team dropped its first conference match of the season to Newman 1-0 in double-overtime, Friday afternoon at the SEU Soccer Field.

St. Edward's (13-2-1, 8-1 HC) maintained possession of the ball nearly the entire first half, and after firing eight shots could not find the back of the net.

Newman (7-5-4, 5-2-2 HC) fired their first shot in the last 10 seconds of the half though it was blocked by the Hilltopper defense. The teams would remain even 0-0 at the half.

The Jets tightened their defense even more in the second half keeping the high powered Hilltopper offense scoreless after taking 12 more shots. Neither team could score in regulation which would take the match into overtime.

In the first overtime the Hilltoppers were awarded a penalty-kick but the Jets goalkeeper Christina Farid was there to block the attempt by senior Kim Abbott. After 109 minutes of play a tie was eminent yet a Jets counter attack resulted in Karina Ortiz placing a goal against the Hilltoppers with only 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Jets 32-5. The Hilltoppers totaled 15 corner kicks to the opponent's one.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Friday as they travel to take on Incarnate Word. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
