Hilltoppers Finish Regular Season Play with a Victory over St. Mary’s, 3-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The St. Edward's women's soccer team defeated conference rival St. Mary's, 3-0 Saturday afternoon in front of a large Rattler crowd to finish the regular season.

St. Edward's (15-3-1, 10-2 HC) would strike early in the first half with a shot in the 17th minute by sophomore Brianna Hinnenkamp, placing the ball just past the keeper unassisted. Following the goal, the Hilltoppers continued to pressure the Rattlers adding seven more shots before the half. The score remained unchanged with the Hilltoppers up, 1-0.

In the second half the Hilltoppers looked to strike early with junior Janae Averett placing a shot-on-goal within the first 30 seconds yet the Rattler goalkeeper Mari Edwards reeled in another save.

St. Mary's (4-14-1, 4-8 HC) looked to even things up in the 50th minute after they were awarded a penalty-kick yet sophomore goalkeeper Claire Tilton was there to save the Rattler attempt.

The Hilltoppers quickly countered on the saved penalty-kick with senior Kim Abbott heading the ball over Edwards' hands to extend the Hilltopper lead in the 51st minute. St. Edward's would add one more goal to the match in the 89th minute when Abbott crossed the ball into the box where sophomore Kelly Servage was there to touch it past the keeper.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Rattlers 28-2. Tilton and the Hilltopper defense were credited with the shutout.
