Hilltoppers Unable to Overcome Early Lead, Fall to Incarnate Word, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas - The St. Edward's women's soccer team dropped its second straight match of the season. Incarnate Word held onto an early 1-0 lead in San Antonio's Benson Stadium.

St. Edward's (13-3-1, 8-2 HC) formulated an attack early against the Cardinals with senior Kim Abbott placing a shot just high in the 4th minute. Junior Janae Averett placed a shot on goal in the 10th minute that was just saved by Cardinal goalkeeper Tori Puentes.

Incarnate Word (13-2-3, 8-1-1 HC) capitalized on a counter-attack by Sarah Hernandez in the 14th minute with a shot 25 yards out, just out of the reach of sophomore Claire Tilton. Sophomore Kelly Servage looked to even things up in the 21st minute yet her shot bounced off the crossbar and cleared by the Cardinal defense.

In the second half junior Emily Arnold tried to take the match into overtime placing two shots against the Cardinals in the final minute though they were met by Puentes.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Cardinals 15-5 as well as totaling 6 corner kicks compared to the Cardinals one. Tilton totaled four saves in the match.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sunday as they travel to take on Texas A&M International. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
