Giles homers in sixth inning to lead #22 St. Edward’s to a win, 1-0, over Ferris State
HOUSTON, Texas - St. Edward's freshman Stacy Giles hit her third home run of the season to give St. Edward's the victory over Ferris State, 1-0, Thursday at Warrior Field. The win will advance the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Division II World Series Semifinal game on Friday.
The game remained scoreless for more than five innings as St. Edward's (53-15) and Ferris State (35-17) battled for the chance to advance in the tournament. The Hilltoppers reached scoring position in the second inning when freshman Courtney Lavender stole second with two outs. A ground out to shortstop would end the inning before St. Edward's was able to capitalize.
The Bulldogs looked for a rally in the top of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. A popup by Rhea Flores was caught by Lavender in foul territory to shut down the opportunity for Ferris State.
In the bottom of the inning, Giles hit a leadoff homer to left center to give the Hilltoppers the edge, 1-0.
St. Edward's would take the Bulldogs down in order in the seventh inning to maintain the lead and win the game.
The Hilltoppers will advance to the semifinal game on Friday against the winner of Francis Marion and Emporia State. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Warrior Field of Memorial Park. Logan Lawrence will bring you all the action live on the St. Edward's Athletics website.
