St. Edward’s softball signs five for 2009 season

AUSTIN, Texas - St. Edward's Head Softball Coach Amy Coulter announced the signing of five individuals on Wednesday morning.  High School seniors Meagan Bailey, Lana Jo Hairston, Katilyn Polk, Paige Sandahl and Miranda Yeager will join the Hilltoppers for the 2008-09 season.

Bailey, a senior at Brazoswood high School, is a three-year letterwinner.  She was named academic all-district her sophomore and junior seasons.  Bailey helped lead her team to the State semifinals her freshman season.  She chose St. Edward's over North Carolina.

Hairston, a senior at Brazoswood High School, was selected first-team all-district her junior season after striking out 119 batters in 79.1 innings of work that led to a 0.37 earner-run average.  She also helped lead her team to the State semifinals her sophomore season and Regional semifinals her junior season. Hairston chose St. Edward's over Abilene Christian and Midwestern State.

Polk, a senior at San Marcos High School, was named first-team all-district her freshman through senior seasons.  She was also named academic all-district all three years and helped lead her team to the playoffs every year.

Sandahl, a senior at Dripping springs High School, was named first-team all-district and second-team all-Centex her sophomore and junior seasons after going a combined 35-8 on the mound for the Tigers.  She also tallied 356 strikeouts in only 194.0 innings of work her junior season on her way to being named the district's most valuable player.  She chose St. Edward's over Centenary, Central Arkansas, Delta State, St. Mary's and Tennessee State.

Yeager, a senior at Katy Mayde Creek High School, was named first-team all-district her freshman and junior seasons, and was academic all-district her freshman through junior seasons.  She was also a team captain her junior and senior seasons.  Yeager helped lead her team to the playoffs her junior season.  Yeager chose St. Edward's over Austin College, Concordia, Sam Houston State and Southwestern.

"Our 2008 recruiting class holds two of the country's best pitchers, as well as players with speed and power offensively," Coulter said.  "I am very excited about the future of our program."

St. Edward's finished last season with a 43-18 record and a second-straight Heartland Conference Championship.  They advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in a row and made it to the semifnals
