Hilltopper Women's Tennis sweeps Heartland Conference matches this weekend
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The 22nd-ranked St. Edward's women's tennis team swept a pair of matches versus Heartland Conference opponents on Saturday. The Hilltoppers downed #33 Incarnate Word, 5-4, and then defeated St. Mary's, 9-0, later that afternoon.
In the match versus Incarnate Word, the Hilltoppers started slow, dropping two of the three doubles matches. Senior Regina DelBosque and freshman Audrey Tompkins teamed up to take out Sarah Caswell and Stephanie Rodriguez, 8-6, at the number one position.
St. Edward's got things rolling in the singles matches. Tompkins, DelBosque and junior Elizabeth Jacobi all won their matchups. It came down to freshman Heather Brien at the number five position. The College Station, Texas native came up clutch as she defeated Erica Engberg, 6-4, 7-5, to win the match for the Hilltoppers.
In the second match of the day, St. Edward's won all three doubles matches and never looked back as they swept St. Mary's, 9-0.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to Dallas to take on East Central in a neutral site matchup. First-serve is set for noon.
