Hilltoppers Have Impressive Showing at Texas State Play Day
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The St. Edward's women's tennis team had an impressive showing in the Texas State Play Day Saturday with a total of five victories in singles and doubles action.
In singles action freshmen Paige Rachel opened up the day for the Hilltoppers defeating Caroline Dedering of UT-San Antonio, 6-4, 6-0. She was followed by sophomore Audrey Tompkins who defeated Andrea Giraldo of Texas State in a hard fought three sets, 2-6, 7-6, 10-5. Sophomore Heather Brien finished up the first round with a difficult loss to Kiki Kruse of Texas State, 6-0, 6-1.
The Hilltoppers continued their streak in the second round of singles play with Rachel defeating Vivian Carillo of UT-San Antonio in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Tompkins was defeated by Dedering in close sets, 7-5, 6-3. Brien was the last to play in the second round with a loss to Meagan Bedeau of UT-Pan American, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, Rachel and Tompkins took down Texas State's duo of Nyssa Peele and Gabriela Rojas, 8-6. Sophomore Mary Bain and Brien took down the UT-Pan American team of Reetta Raty and Andrea Salvetova, 8-6. Senior Elizabeth Jacobi teamed up with Texas State senior Amanda Alvarado in a defeat by Kavya Menon and Nicci Yvanovich of UT-San Antonio, 8-3.
This concludes the Fall season for the Hilltoppers. The women's tennis team will open up play February 5 as they travel to Beaumont to face Lamar.
