Hundt’s record-breaking performance helps Hilltoppers remain perfect in conference play

AUSTIN, Texas – Michelle Hundt’s record-breaking 34 digs helped the St. Edward’s volleyball team defeat Dallas Baptist University in three sets, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-23 to move to 5-0 in conference play. The three-set record was 33 held by Brittany Brown, set in 2007.

In the first set, Dallas Baptist (7-6, 2-3 HC) jumped to an early lead, 3-0, taking advantage of three errors by St. Edward’s (8-5, 5-0 HC). The Hilltoppers would look for a long rally to take the lead but the Patriots kept them at bay. With St. Edward’s down 17-12, a kill by Ale’tra Ware (Junior, Waco, Texas) sparked a huge nine-point rally with Elissa Stanton (Freshman, Hutto, Texas) contributing two kills and a block in the run to put the Hilltoppers up 21-17. The momentum proved too much for Dallas Baptist as they were unable to reclaim a lead with St. Edward’s taking the set, 25-23.

For the second set the two teams battled early on exchanging leads as well as short rallies. With the set tied for the final time at 20-20, a block by Lindy Luleff (Senior, Lewisville, Texas) and Ware sparked the final 5-2 run with the Hilltoppers winning the set, 25-22.

Looking to sweep the Patriots in three, St. Edward’s came out strong in the third set claiming a commanding lead 15-10. Dallas Baptist answered back with two back-to-back kills, but was unable to lessen the Hilltopper lead. Up 23-18, St. Edward’s committed four errors in the final 2-6 run that let the Patriots get within reach, but the final kill by Ashley Vander Hey (Senior, Cypress, Texas) put the match away, 25-23.

Leaders for the Hilltoppers were Whitney Rhoden (Senior, Friendswood, Texas) with 15 kills. Courtney Trevino (Senior, Austin, Texas) and Mary McNamara (Sophomore, The Woodlands, Texas) both collected double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs, and 28 assists and 18 digs, respectively.

Dallas Baptist leaders were Tyler Bradsher with 16 assists and Cameron Hartson with 28 digs.
