SOCI 1301 Self and Society 3 hours An introduction
to sociology: its questions, concepts and ways of analyzing social life. The focus
is on how human societies organize themselves, how culture, socialization, norms,
values, power relations, social institutions and group interaction affect the
individual and how, in turn, societies are transformed by human action. Of particular
concern are problems facing contemporary societies. Fall, Spring.
SOCI 2120 Community Service in Sociology 1 hour Provides a learning experience in a community service organization or agency. Provides an opportunity to test interest and aptitude for careers in human services. May be repeated for credit. Students should apply to the instructor in the prior semester and plan to spend 50 hours in the field. Fall, Spring.
SOCI 2321 Current Issues in Family 3 hours Systematic examination of the history of American families and contemporary changes affecting and taking place within today's families. Attention is directed to in-depth consideration of four or five major issues, such as divorce, co-habitation, single-parent families, family violence, dual-worker families, etc. Offered on sufficient demand.
SOCI 2325 Social Policy 3 hours Students are taught to analyze public policy in the United States, with an emphasis on social welfare policies and services. Policy areas covered include Social Security, TANF, Medicaid and Medicare, as well as education, health and child welfare. Examines process of policy formulation and strategies for influencing policy alternatives. Same as SOCW 2325. Pre- or co-requisite: CULF 2321 or equivalent. Fall.
SOCI 2329 Social Statistics 3 hours Basic statistical methods emphasizing social science application of measurement. Topics covered: measurement scales, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, t-distribution, correlation, chi square and non-parametric statistics, multiple regression, and causal modeling. Prerequisite: College math. This course is prerequisite to SOCI 3330 Social Research. Fall, Spring.
SOCI 2345 Social Theory 3 hours Reviews historical backgrounds
of theories, concepts and methods of sociology. Systematic analysis of sociological
theories and schools of thought. Prerequisite: SOCI 1301. Spring.
SOCI 2351 Cultural Anthropology 3 hours A broad survey of
the field of anthropology emphasizing crosscultural variations in human culture,
including kinship and social organization, religion, politics, and economics.
Culture, cultural evolution and the archaeological record are integrating concepts
in the course. Spring.
SOCI 2399 Topics in Sociology 3 hours Course may be repeated as subjects change.
SOCI 3315 Sociology of the Environment 3 hours Human societies interact with the natural environments in which they are embedded. An examination of the driving economic, political, cultural and demographic forces that cause human modification of the natural world, and the resulting social and environmental problems and public controversies. A focus on movements and policies related to environmental issues, and the prospects for the emergence of more environmentally "sustainable" societies. Spring, odd-numbered years.
SOCI 3327 Marriage and Family 3 hours This course examines contemporary marriage and family in American society. Topics include gender roles, sexual values, dating and mate selection, alternative families and lifestyles, communication and conflict, domestic violence, dysfunctional families, chemical dependency, divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies. Current research and concepts related to family counseling are examined. Cultural diversity in marriage and family customs is considered. This course provides the knowledge base for family assessment or for understanding one's own family. Same as PSYC 2327 and SOCW 2327. Prerequisite: PSYC 2301 or SOCI 1301. Fall, Spring.
SOCI 3330 Social Research 3 hours Fundamentals of
research design, data collection and analysis are presented. The nature of bias
in research is explored. The development of skills for using and conducting research
in practice settings is emphasized. Same as SOCW 3330. Prerequisite: SOCI 2329.

SOCI 3334 Sociology of Religion 3 hours An examination of religious beliefs, behaviors and structures as they relate to contemporary America. In addition to studying established religious forms, attention is also given to the public controversies connected with religion and to new religious movements and trends. Fall.
SOCI 3337 Medical Anthropology 3 hours This course utilizes a variety of anthropological theories to explore the interaction between health, culture and disease. It examines how cultures both conceptualize illness and shape healing systems, studies adaptations between humans and pathogens, and discusses applications of medical anthropology to world health issues. Fall, even-numbered years.
SOCI 4338 Sociology of Health and Illness 3 hours This course will explore the U.S. healtcare system with a goal to enable greater insight through the use of sociological concepts and perspectives and to foster a broader vision of the field. Various topics will be discussed, including healthcare as a social institution, the socialization of physicians and other healthcare workers, healthcare deliver, and efforts to reform the healthcare system. Fall, odd-numbered years.
SOCI 4343 Race, Class and Gender 3 hours
This course analyzes the forms and consequences of race, class and gender oppression
in the United States. Contemporary and classical theories of stratification are
reviewed. Mechanisms that perpetuate inequality are identified. Related social
research and economic data are examined. Students are expected to analyze a variety
of viewpoints and to clarify their own beliefs and values regarding issues of
social justice. Same as PSYC 3330, SOCW 4343. Prerequisites: SOCI 1301, CULF 1320
and 2321. Spring.
SOCI 4346 Urban Sociology 3 hours A study
of the city and its growth; social organization and relationships within metropolitan
areas; urban planning and redevelopment. Prerequisite: SOCI 1301 or consent of
instructor. Fall, odd-numbered years.
SOCI 4347 Directed Independent Research 3 hours
Student-initiated project on a focused topic in sociology, utilizing library
materials and existing data sets, and involving close coordination with a supervising
faculty member. Students should apply to the instructor a semester in advance.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, Sociology major, SOCI 3330. Fall, Spring.
SOCI 4349 Topics in Sociology 3 hours Course may be repeated
as topics change.
SOCI 4350, 4650 Internship in Sociology 3 or 6 hours An educationally
directed program under the supervision of faculty and professionals in the field
that offers students opportunities to acquire skills and to test in a field
setting theories and principles learned in the classroom. Prerequisites: SOCI
2120 and senior standing. Students should apply to the instructor a semester
in advance and plan to spend 150 (300) hours in the field. (May be repeated as
placements change.) Fall, Spring.
