MS in CIS Curriculum and Courses

The MSCIS program consists of one one-hour and one three-hour foundation course (Phase I), which students with the equivalent undergraduate course work may be exempt from, and 12 three-hour courses in three remaining phases. Phase II consists of five core courses in information systems topics. Phase III offers six advanced courses in specialized areas of information systems. Phase IV brings the program together with a Capstone project utilizing skills gained throughout MSCIS course work.

Phases I–IV

Phase I: Foundation Courses, 4 hours (or equivalent undergraduate course work)

  • MCIS 5100 Introduction to Management Information Systems (or an undergraduate degree in CIS, MIS or CS, or two semester hours of an Introduction to Management Information Systems course, or successful completion of the waiver exam)
  • MCIS 5301 Introduction to Computer Programming (or an undergraduate degree in CIS, MIS or CS, or three semester hours of a modern structured or object-oriented programming language such as Java, C++, Smalltalk or Visual Basic)

Phase II: Core Courses, 15 hours

  • MCIS 6305 Organizational and Operations Management
  • MCIS 6306 Database Systems
  • MCIS 6307 Strategic IS and IT Management
  • MCIS 6308 Internet and Network Technologies
  • MCIS 6309 Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management

Phase III: Advanced Courses, 18 hours

  • MCIS 6310 Analysis, Modeling and Design
  • MCIS 6312 Data Security Management
  • MCIS 6313 Data Warehousing and Data Mining
  • MCIS 6314 Web Programming
  • MCIS 6320 Project and Change Management
  • MCIS 6399 Special Topics in Information Systems

Phase IV: Capstone Course, 3 hours

  • MCIS 6315 Information Systems Capstone

JOINT MSCIS/MBA PROGRAM

Students interested in pursuing both the MBA with MIS concentration and MSCIS graduate degrees from St. Edward’s University may do so, if admitted to both programs, by completing the following 27 hours of unique course work to receive the MSCIS degree in addition to the MBA with MIS concentration:

  • MCIS 6310 Analysis, Modeling and Design
  • MCIS 6312 Data Security Management
  • MCIS 6313 Data Warehousing and Data Mining
  • MCIS 6314 Web Programming
  • MCIS 6320 Project and Change Management
  • MCIS 6399 Special Topics in Information Systems; repeated (must be two unique topics)
  • MCIS 6318 Managerial Problem Solving
  • MCIS 6325 Scenario Planning
