A "Super" Success

Rebecca Gonzalez
Rebecca Gonzalez, '04

Start with chips and salsa.
It's hard to imagine a Super Bowl party without tortilla chips and salsa. Every year, local grocery stores work their hardest to remind football fans to stock up on these game-day favorites. And during Super Bowl 2003, a local H-E-B did just that - thanks to the hard work and creativity of Rebecca Gonzalez. With Gonzalez's help, the store jumped 64 spots in chips and salsa sales during Super Bowl weekend.

Gonzalez, a Marketing major, applied for an internship with H-E-B in 2003. Along with over 100 other applicants, she sweated through two rounds of interviews. At the end, only 25 applicants were offered internships. And Gonzalez was one of them.

Create a successful game plan.
Her main responsibility was to increase sales. Gonzalez took charge of the 2003 Super Bowl chips and salsa sales campaign. She was determined to improve the store's sales and ranking.

She arranged for four different football-themed displays promoting chips and salsa to be placed throughout the store. Gonzalez also organized in-store announcements about the products, assembled tables for customers to sample chips with various salsa flavor, and sent out promotional fliers to nearby residents.

Her plan paid off. The store increased Super Bowl chips and salsa sales by $3,000 - and came in number one in company rankings.

Score!
Gonzalez was so successful that her supervisor extended the internship. Gonzalez continued to develop but also took on other duties, like completing the payroll, submitting sales projections and delivering approved projections to in-store managers.

And the best part? After she graduated last May, Gonzalez was offered a full-time position with H-E-B. She took it.
