With its state-of-the-art classrooms and hands-on laboratories, the new sciences center enables St. Edward’s to provide exceptional experiences for science majors and non-majors alike. Plus, the facilities provide our exceptional faculty with excellent resources for teaching and research.
Plans for the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center–South Building are currently underway with an expected completion date of Fall 2012.
A Legacy of Learning
The estate of businessman John Brooks Williams, owner of Markle Steel Company, provided $12.5 million to construct the expansive center. Williams’ longtime friend, university trustee John H. Bauer, ’62, served as executor of Williams’ estate.
“I am proud that through the creation of the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center, future students will benefit from a world-class facility where they can think and dream and create their future,” said. Bauer, “In so doing, they will honor Brooks’ memory every time they use the building.”
Collaborative Nature of Science
Plans for the new science complex began in August 2001 during a weeklong Natural Sciences faculty retreat. The school had outgrown Fleck Hall, its home since 1959.
Two firms, Research Facilities Design, a Santa Monica–based architectural firm with a specialty in science buildings, and Moore Ruble Yudell, collaborated on a design. Spacious labs with leading-edge technology meets the needs of students and faculty, while energy-saving design elements support the university’s efforts to decrease consumption of natural resources.
