Students benefit from hands-on learning with the latest technology at the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center.Science of Design

In Fall 2006, St. Edward’s University celebrated the grand opening of the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center–North Building. This first phase of the center — totaling 65,000 square feet — houses the Biology and Chemistry programs and integrates hands-on learning with the latest technology through:

  • Spacious classrooms and
    research laboratories
  • Advanced instruments for professors
    and students
  • A greenhouse complex with an automated shading system
  • Gallery space for research displays
  • Comfortable lounges and cozy spaces for small-group study

And the learning doesn’t stop at the walls of the facility. Using an innovative approach to design known as “see-through science,” passersby get a chance to see professors and students at work in the first-floor labs. Developed by a British think tank, the approach to building design helps bolster support and interest in the sciences by engaging the entire university community.

Sustainability by Design St. Edward’s is helping reduce negative impacts on the environment by implementing sustainable design principles in new campus constructions. Did you know? Specially treated windows throughout the building keep out the heat and fill the classrooms and labs with natural light. The center's angled roof (with 18,000 square feet of shingles) functions as a sun block that helps keep the building cool and conserves energy. Air-conditioning units in the sciences center feature variable speed drives that reduce the energy of heating and cooling when fewer people use the facility.

With its state-of-the-art classrooms and hands-on laboratories, the new sciences center enables St. Edward’s to provide exceptional experiences for science majors and non-majors alike. Plus, the facilities provide our exceptional faculty with excellent resources for teaching and research.

Plans for the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center–South Building are currently underway with an expected completion date of Fall 2012.

A Legacy of Learning
The estate of businessman John Brooks Williams, owner of Markle Steel Company, provided $12.5 million to construct the expansive center. Williams’ longtime friend, university trustee John H. Bauer, ’62, served as executor of Williams’ estate.

“I am proud that through the creation of the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center, future students will benefit from a world-class facility where they can think and dream and create their future,” said. Bauer, “In so doing, they will honor Brooks’ memory every time they use the building.”

Collaborative Nature of Science
Plans for the new science complex began in August 2001 during a weeklong Natural Sciences faculty retreat. The school had outgrown Fleck Hall, its home since 1959.

Two firms, Research Facilities Design, a Santa Monica–based architectural firm with a specialty in science buildings, and Moore Ruble Yudell, collaborated on a design. Spacious labs with leading-edge technology meets the needs of students and faculty, while energy-saving design elements support the university’s efforts to decrease consumption of natural resources.
