The New Chapel for the University Community
Since the adoption of the master plan in 2000, undergraduate enrollment has increased by more than 80 percent. And with more than 5,000 students, worship services and Campus Ministry programs have outgrown the space in the Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel and Mang House, the nearby administrative building.
Included in the university’s master plan is the construction of a new chapel that will meet the needs of a growing campus. A symbol of the university’s commitment to its Catholic heritage, the new chapel also will provide a home for The Holy Cross Institute.
The new chapel will be designed by architect Rick Joy of Rick Joy Architects in Tucson, Ariz. Winner of a 2004 National Design Award, Joy was selected for the project from more than 20 nationally renowned architects.
A Place for Contemplation
Whether promoting a sense of community through daily Mass or providing a place for quiet contemplation, the chapel will be a warm and inviting signature building for St. Edward’s. Centrally located between residence halls and the John Brooks Williams Natural Sciences Center, the chapel site ensures easy access for students, faculty and staff members, and the community while offering stunning views of downtown Austin and the neighboring Texas
Hill Country.
