SEU Community Letter

Dear SEU Community,

As you may know, our institution recently purchased AlcoholEdu ® for College. This online alcohol prevention program is designed to be used on a population level – that is, given to an entire population of students, such as an entering first-year class or a national Greek organization. This method creates a comprehensive learning experience that:

  • Motivates behavior change
  • Resets unrealistic expectations about the effects of alcohol
  • Links choices about drinking to academic and personal success
  • Helps students practice healthier and safer decision-making

We are announcing that we are implementing our AlcoholEdu for College program at St. Edward's University. There are several steps involved in implementing this program. The diagram below highlights the process our students will go through when taking AlcoholEdu for College:

As the diagram illustrates our students will be taking three surveys throughout the course, which will allow us to collect critical data on their attitudes and behaviors toward alcohol–including students' readiness to change their behavior, which protective factors or high-risk factors they exhibit, and what expectations they have toward alcohol. All of this data will help us better understand and meet the needs of our students.

Outside The Classroom will notify us when our students' aggregate AlcoholEdu results are available. We will be able to access our Interactive AlcoholEdu Reports through the Web Enabled Survey System ( WESS ) on our AlcoholEdu Hub.

WESS will allow us to compare our data to other data sets, including Outside The Classroom's AlcoholEdu national aggregate data and data from those institutions with similar Carnegie Classification. We will also be able to create custom presentations and electronically share custom reports and analysis with you.

Present Endeavors Utilizing AlcoholEdu for College

Our current accomplishments to achieve the most successful implementation on our campus include the following:

  • Alcohol & Other Drug Task Force has coordinated across the university to create an AlcoholEdu Team. This team will collaborate to plan a smooth implementation, as well as to help reinforce key concepts and create discussion opportunities with students as they face many decisions during their transition into college.
  • We strategically selected the dates to implement AlcoholEdu for College. We selected this time period to reach a high level of participation.
  • We will track our students' progress through their AlcoholEdu experience – by monitoring students' participation, we can ensure that as many students as possible will benefit from the science-based education and helpful decision-making strategies related to alcohol covered in this program.
  • As a follow-up to the first part of the AlcoholEdu program, our institution will be providing the additional programming initiatives: educational programs, national college health campaigns, peer education, and online resources.

Additionally, the following are just a few examples of how we will be using AlcoholEdu to meet our long-term strategic outcomes in alcohol prevention and how we will measure those outcomes using our AlcoholEdu data over the next three to five years:

  • a 5% increase in student awareness of alcohol-related issues
  • a 5% reduction in on-campus alcohol and other drug-related citations
  • a 5% reduction in the number of underage students drinking
  • a 5% reduction in the number of students binge drinking
  • a 5% increase in the number of faculty and staff involved in efforts to prevent alcohol and other drug-use problems

We look forward to sharing our progress throughout the implementation as well as the final AlcoholEdu Interactive Reports with you this academic year. If you have any additional questions about AlcoholEdu for College, please feel free to contact Kevin (KP) J. Prince, Ph.D.
