The Alcohol & Other Drug Task Force is leading an effort to offer the Good Samaritan train-the-trainer seminar to students, staff, and faculty as well as invited guests. The Good Samaritan Training is a bystander behavior seminar to encourage better decision-making, promote a community of excellence, and avoid hazards related to misbehavior (i.e., alcohol misuse, gender bias, relationship violence). We are inviting student leaders and professionals to participate in a one-day seminar for Good Samaritan trainers. Alan Berkowitz , Ph.D., an independent consultant and leading expert, will facilitate the seminar. |
As a member of the St. Edward's University community, students, faculty, and staff have a special role to live the mission of the Holy Cross and dare to be excellent. Excellence requires taking some responsibility for creating an environment that supports the collective. It also necessitates making safe and healthy choices, embracing diversity and inclusion, and promoting life-long learning. As such, the Good Samaritan Training will provide training to apply knowledge, skills, and research to specialized areas such as alcohol misuse, diversity and inclusion, and relationship violence among others. Dr. Berkowitz will focus on the following topics:
- Help bystanders notice a problematic incident taking place.
- Encourage bystanders to evaluate a situation and determine whether it is an emergency—or at least one in which someone needs assistance.
- Assist bystanders to decide whether they should assume responsibility for giving help
- Discuss the research on motivations for why bystanders assume responsibility
- Brainstorm and offer various options for bystanders to consider and get involved
- Strategize about using marketing skills to promote the values and ideals of St. Edward's
