Couples & Group Counseling

Couples Counseling

Women and men are social beings. Sexual attraction is only one facet of the communication which is a part of your intimate couple relationship. Another facet is your ability to successfully communicate your needs and desires to your partner in a clear and self-affirming way, helping to make your relationship more successful. Communication means clearly expressing yourself and being able to listen to your partner and understanding his or her needs and desires as well.

Many modern relationship difficulties can be improved through education and/or psychotherapeutic techniques. When couples are experiencing difficulties in communication, problem solving and intimacy, counseling can help to resolve these problems and enhance relationships. Through education and self-exploration, couples counseling can supply couples the psychological tools necessary to develop a more rewarding relationship.

One member of couple must be a student to be eligible to receive couples counseling.

Group Counseling

At various times, the center offers group therapy and life skills groups. These groups offer options for individuals who want feedback or additional support while addressing their concerns. Clients participating in groups have an opportunity to talk with other individuals sharing similar concerns and often learn problem-solving strategies. The content of the group sessions is confidential; what members talk about or disclose may not be discussed outside the group.

One form of group counseling is group therapy. Group therapy offers the client a way to explore issues in an interpersonal context that more accurately reflects real life. These groups allow clients to observe and reflect on their own and others' interpersonal skills. Participation encourages clients to work through personal issues in a safe, supportive, confidential atmosphere. A screening process ensures that appropriate group referrals are made.

Another form of group counseling is life skills groups. Life skills groups serve to educate, emphasize learning, and focus on developing skills. These groups are offered on a range of educational and psychological topics, are open to all students and do not necessarily require screening prior to participation.
