A native son of Houston, Texas, I have lived and worked in many states across the country including California, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey/New York, and Georgia. I received my bachelor's degree at Prairie View A&M University, master's degree from Rutgers University, Specialist in Education degree at Georgia State University, and my doctor of philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia. After a nearly ten year hiatus to pursue graduate school, start a family with my partner, conduct research, and receive the pleasure of working with many wonderful people, I have returned to Texas to settle down. Throughout, I have attempted to expand my worldview to include a larger slice of the multifaceted American experience.
I came to St. Edward's University in August 2003. Working in university counseling centers has been a focus of my training and experience for several years. Working with college students always keeps me abreast of the latest and greatest happenings in music and movies from the underground, uptown, and out of this world. I bring my experience working in college settings and community agencies including multiple roles from a mentor/advisor to African American college men and an advisor for an Asian American sorority to a volunteer coordinator in East Atlanta and Social Worker with youth and their families in the South Bronx, New York. I have enjoyed how the spirit of people moves them to live toward wellness. My role has been to support their individual and collective endeavors to strive beyond difficult challenges and empower people to be powerful beyond measure.
The following statement speaks well of the people I have worked with professionally and the special relationships that I have been privileged to develop with friends and family:
"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others..."
