Marla joined the SEU Psychological Services Center in June 2003. She was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she earned a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Criminology at the University of New Mexico. She then moved to Texas where she earned an M.A. in Sociology from The University of Texas at Austin, specializing in juvenile delinquency and peer influence. With her continued interest in understanding human behavior and wanting to have more direct impact on the people she was working with, she decided to pursue a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. Her dissertation focused on the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and adult revictimization. She completed her doctoral internship at the Counseling and Mental Health Center at The University of Texas at Austin, and received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in December 2002.

Marla has provided counseling in a variety of different settings including a rape crisis center, family health clinic, community mental health center, juvenile detention facility, veteran association, as well as nursing homes and college counseling centers. Her research and clinical interests include trauma, PTSD, survival, resilience, interpersonal style and safety; sexual assault and domestic violence; eating disorders, body image, emotional eating, and self-esteem; and therapeutic process and outcome.

Marla is excited about being part of the SEU community. She looks forward to working with the Psychological Services team in terms of extending mental health services campus-wide in an effort to increase awareness/understanding and address specific concerns and issues that are most prevalent on college campuses, particularly those we face here at SEU. She also is excited to continue her journey growing and learning from the wonderful staff members and students at SEU.
