Counseling & Consultation Center
Reflecting Team

Reflecting Team

There are times in life when a person feels stuck and would like to hear new ideas to broaden his/her perspective. The center offers a reflecting team as an effective problem-solving option. Reflecting teams are particularly helpful in creating meaningful solutions and putting ideas into action.

The reflecting process involves several observers (psychological counselors) listening to the conversation between the therapist(s) and the client behind a one-way mirror. After a while, the client and therapist(s) stop their conversation, invite the observers into the room, and listen while the observers talk among themselves or directly to the client about the conversation in what is called a reflection. This method brings the observers' conversation directly to the client by providing a multiplicity of ideas. After the reflection, the observers' leave the room where the client and therapist(s) comment on what they have heard from the observers and discuss what may fit the client's situation.

The reflecting team consists of two or three senior staff members and two psychology trainees who meet with the client in a one-and-a-half-hour session. This service is available on request or may be recommended by a counselor.
