Experiential Learning
It is very important to obtain experience towards your future
career. Opportunities such as:
- Volunteer work
- Community service
- Service learning
- Internships
- Study Abroad
- Mentoring
- Campus leadership activities
- Campus clubs and organizations
- Professional organizations
- Athletics
help develop professional skills and advance your knowledge beyond
what you learn in the classroom.
You should do at least two internships, plus
additional activities listed above, to be more marketable when
you are job seeking. Internships are
discussed further in another section of this web site.
Volunteerism, community service, and service learning are also
valuable avenues for securing experience. Non-profit organizations
always need extra help, so if you work in a non-profit it’s
a win-win situation for you and the organization. Watch for information
on St. Edward’s Volunteer Fair which is usually offered
in the fall semester. And check out these web sites for other
volunteer opportunities: http://www.volunteersolutions.com
and http://www.idealist.org
Getting involved in campus leadership activities and clubs/organizations
is another excellent way to develop professional skills, such
as:
supervisory
interpersonal
planning
facilitating |
communication
multicultural/diversity
organizing
writing |
conflict mediation
creative
public speaking
….and many others. |
